READING DEM BONES
Back in the day, many didn't have reading cards, as they cost moneyâbut bones were easily gotten. In addition, bone reading is traditional in Conjure. Reading the bones comes straight out of Africa, although the readings may be a little different The sangomas of South Africa are the traditional bone readers. They are the spiritual doctors and healers, and they take care of their people. Their style of bone reading is different than the one that is worked with over here now, but I feel the concept of our bone reading comes from them and the ancestors that brought it over here through slavery.
We have to understand that when the ancestors were kidnaped and brought across the water, they had absolutely nothing with them except for their knowledge and memories of home. They didn't have notes and books for references; they had stories and information that was handed down by word of mouth from one generation to the next. That is how I have learned everything I knowâby word of mouth. That is also the reason I teach the way I do, because that is how I was taught. The ancestors weren't allowed to know how to read and write, although some of them were still taught verbally.
There is a difference in the way the sangomas read the bones and the way I was taught to read the bones. I have been bone throwing since I was a young child. It started out as a game (children learn by what they see and what they hear). I started out with learning the shapes the bones madeâa cross, an X, a road, and so on. Then I grew up. I read bones much better than I do cards because the ancestors speak strongly to me through the bones. I think it's because throwing the bones is a traditional way of divining.
The sangomas don't have a limit to the number of bones they have; they keep them in a bowl or basket and throw a handful at a time. They are true healers, so they throw them to find out what is going on with their clients. I know of some people who read sangoma style and swear by it, but that is not a traditional Conjure bone reading.
I have heard some readers say that they have containers of bones and they just grab a handful and throw them out. This is not traditional bone reading. Every reader has a right to read the bones how they want to, but they don't have the right to call it a traditional Conjure bone reading if that is not what it is. Like everything else on the internet, bone reading has become one of the hot topics and everyone is a master. That is one of the main reasons I agreed to write this bookâso the foundation won't be lost or turned into something it's not.
I was taught that you should only have enough bones to hold in your hands.
